After a few years, Yahoo! web-hosting has become horrendous. So horrendous that we've decided to go with a virtual dedicated server we're gonna share with a good friend.

In 2003, we signed up for one of their 'standard' business hosting packages. At the very beginning, it actually was pretty decent and our site ran really well. Through the years, the availability and performance of our site started to lag, and because of constant DNS changes, sometimes our site would be off-line to most folks for a day or more! Contacting Yahoo! customer service was like talking to a brick wall, with voices on the other end telling me they couldn't help me with my problem, or that it was because I needed to clear my browser's cache and cookies! Yeah, that's really gonna help when that particular problem was that their mail servers were not accepting connections...

After all of this nonsense, and because Yahoo! hosting continuously blocked legit e-mails from business associates, I decided to take our hosting elsewhere. I was going to just drop down to Yahoo!'s domain-only product and just change the name-server values to our new host. This proved to be great in theory, but Yahoo! couldn't do it because their current technicians couldn't figure out how to delete some errant values their older system had created when our account was first created in 2003. Now, how is it that none of their current technicians have even the slightest clue on how to fix this? They even told me "sorry, we don't have the ability to fix your account. You'll have to cancel your service with us, then sign up again as a new customer."

I have since tried to transfer my domain to another vendor, but now Yahoo! is dragging their feet and holding up the transfer. Just set me loose already!

Has anyone else been burned by Yahoo! web-hosting? And if so, did you move to someone else?

Wow, sounds crappy.

Thanks for sharing so we don't get burned.

Yeap, sounds that way!

For me I hate Yahoo Messanger as it's always messing up now-a-days, but it's gone now as my other system crashed (that had Yahoo on it) so hard that it scrambled Win XP.

Yahoo has really went down hill in the last couple of years.

I mean, I've been trying to be less whiny as of late, and have toned down my dissatisfaction of certain companies...but I just had to share that. I don't want anyone to fall into the same trap as I did. Yahoo!, unfortunately, isn't the only one that has bad performance and support, but they're one of the biggest.

My buddy who I'm partnering with on the dedicated server has had a similar experience with Trexhost, so you may want to stay clear of them, too.

I'm pretty sure this is a Yahoo/Windows issue.

My friends that have YM on Windows often have to quit it and re-run it cause it messes up and stops working. It stops sending their messages and receiving my messages.

This is especially true when they use a wireless signal.

Rumor has it that Yahoo used Realbasic to make YM. ;)

I think that's a mistake.

You should complain about crappy products and warn others not to buy them.

Congratulations on your success in being less whiney! :D Your posts are now delightful and informative to read, although legitimate complaints about real problems are a good warning to all.

I have never used Yahoo but can sympathize with you. I selected a web-hosting firm called "1and1" and have been very happy with them. They have good web-creation and tracking tools and 24/7 phone support. Although home location is in Germany, English seems to be the first language of most of their support staff, and acceptable second language of the rest and they know their stuff.
