 Post subject: WIndows 7 Compatibility

I assume that my 2009 RB compiler gives 32 bit code that won't work on a Windows 7 machine. Are there any current versions of RealBasic that produce Windows 7 compatible (64 bit) code?

Real Studio only compiles to 32 bit (64 bit in the future I hope :D )

I use 2009 R2 and runs fine on Vista and Win7

What problems(Errors?) are you seeing?

As far as I know, you can expect 32-bit code to run fine on Win 7, whether it's a Win 7 32-bit or 64-bit system.

Unless I'm misunderstanding things, 64-bit code won't run at all on a Win 7 32-bit system.

You are correct. Though apparently 64 bit Windows 7 is not supported. (Though I fail to find where it says that - perhaps if they don't specifically say it is supported then it is not supported?)

Having said that I have got things to run on Windows 7 64 - though the bugs are numerous. I have not tried Windows 7 32, I don't have it.

I am using Windows 7 64 bits and have no problem running any 32 bits applications developed by ReadlStudio and Delphi.

Windows 7 64 bits can run both 64 and 32 bits applications but a 32 bits Windows can only run 32 bits applications and not 64 bits applications.

Basically the 64 bits Windows 7 has a built-in emulator called WoW64 (Windows 32bit on Windows 64bit) which would run 32 bits applications in the emulated mode. However only 64 bits drivers would run on the Windows 64 bits Windows.

The bugs which you may have seen may not be related to the 32 bits or 64 bits issues but perhaps something else.

Perhaps they are just general bugs inherent in this software. Either way, I have a quite complex Linux-based software, with hundreds of fields, tabs, canvases etc, and it is now becoming attrocious to work with.

(And I do NOT want a lecture from people about splitting it up or doing it some other way, thank you!)

When looking at porting it to MacOS or Windows, it fails miserably (oh it fails also in Linux, but only in one or two areas which I can live with).

One classic example is a groupbox within a groupbox, where the font is larger and bolder than the rest, yet is set to exactly the same font/size.
Also, the IDE for realbasic has big problems on windows 7 x64.

So I continue to stick to Xcode for the Mac and VS for Windows.

I'm getting reports of problems that only happen with Win7 64-bit -- basically scroll bars that don't appear when they should. This is in a canvas-based control (Restrepo's Custom EditField) and so far it seems isolated to Win7/64.

PS - The control uses stock RB scrollbars, so I don't think it's the fault of the edit control.

For the most part, I haven't noticed any significant problems when running Real Studio apps on Windows 7 x64. I mostly remote debug from my Mac to Windows 7 x64 for testing purposes.

The nested GroupBox problem has been around a while. Technically it's a problem with Windows itself. It also didn't work right with early versions of .NET if I recall correctly. I believe .NET now works around it somehow and I'm sure Real Studio could as well. I worked around it in my code by not nesting the GroupBoxes in the window designer and then moving them manually to the correct position in the Open event.

I haven't seen IDE oddities in Windows 7 x64, but I don't really use it much there.

okay just adding my experiences to this thread.
I program in realstudio 2011 r2 on Windows 7 64bit, Intel Core 2 duo machine.
Haven't noticed any problems related specifically to win 7 64bit and haven't had any reports of problems from users of my software that run win7 64bit.

depending on your machine, wow64 is handled differently so maybe it might be related to that in some way. I've no real clue what im talking about though just throwing out guesses.

Just to add more data to ponder, I'm hearing from a couple users that drag-and-drop folder from Dropbox don't work with the current version of my program, but work with an older version. However, drag-and-drop folders from their local box work fine for all versions of my software.

I _think_ the older version of my software was compiled with RB 10.5.1 although it may have been 11.1.1 -- the latest was done with 11.2.0

I don't have Win 7 64-bit on my machine so I can't do any testing yet, but if this issue sounds familiar to anyone, speak up. :)

A somewhat obscure XP/Win7 difference that caused my app to malfunction when I first tried it under 7:

Under XP, a class-compliant USB audio device's name is always reported as "USB Audio Device" by the generic driver regardless of its real name. Under Win 7 the correct device name as specified in its descriptors is reported.

I'm still using RealBasic 7. Today I ran my program on a W7 box for the first time. Lot's of things were wrong.

Reckon if I upgrade to the current RB, it will fix these problems? :?:
