Good morning,
I have problems regarding pictures management on Fedora 11 OS.
I have developed an application under Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5. On several forms I have pictures on canvas and image wells. I imported the pictures in the project (they are all jpg format).
The project is working fine.
I take the same project and work on Real Basic under Fedora 11.
First of all the canvas/image wells are empty.
When I run on debugging mode, Real Basic says that it is not possible to convert the jpg image to BMP.
Ok no problem, I delete the images, import the equivalent BMP files and assign to canvas/image well.
Now the canvas/image wells properly display the loaded picture.
However when I run in debug mode and access to some of the forms with the pictures the application suddenly close (no error, just close).
Can anyone help me?Thanx

P.S.
I have the same behavoir if I create a new project directly under Fedora 11

I have the same issue.
I tracked it down to the BMP files themselves.. Somehow one of the apps I used to save the files saved them as JPG or GIF, but with a BMP extension.
They arent really BMP format.

On Mac and Windows, RB just gets on with it and works.
Under Linux, it crashes without an error message.

The strange thing is that same RB release accepts jpegs on Red Hat but only BMP on Fedora.
However, which program did you use to convert jpegs to BMP?

Ive just restarted work in Ubuntu.
BMP files created by the PaintBrush app on Mac cause the project to close without error in Linux.
They seem to be larger than other app's BMP files, and are therefore probably not RLE encoded.
Thats all I have to report at the moment.

..and I can report that PaintShop Pro on Windows says they arent valid BMP files either.
Odd: they do work in RB under both Windows and OSX
Wonder what they are?

If the image engine can handle multiple formats, it might just look for tags within the image file structure and switch to the appropriate type. Mac is probably using Quicktime translations, and Windows using GDI/GDI+ but maybe REALsoftware needed to write their own BMP parser or the parser that they used is not as forgiving as ones for Mac and Windows.

Look at the binary data of the file, try to find some identifier tags and then look them up on the internet to see what file type they are. Most common would be JPEG, PNG TIFF, or maybe GIF.

First 2 bytes are BM, which is correct for Bitmap.
I havent tried breaking down the rest yet.
I just switched all the BMP files into PNG, and all works fine now.
I dont need to spend time debugging PaintBrush.. :)

Thanx folks,
I will try asap to convert all my images to png format!
I still wonder why the SAME PROJECT on the SAME RB RELEASE behave differently on different LINUX DISTROS (RED HAT, FEDORA)!!!

REALbasic ties into libraries/packages installed on the system. It might be that Fedora uses a different version of a library and it behaves differently (2.5 instead of 1.9 for example).

The disadvantage of Linux is that it is not designed as a whole, but rather contains elements from almost everywhere with different styles and functionality. That means a less consistent behavior compared to Windows or Mac OSes. Its almost like the difference between Mac and Windows computers because the hardware is so different (can be anything) in a Windows machine. Yes, the computer works, but there are more variables and potentially more things to go wrong syncing different elements together.

Yes you are right,

however there is a thing that happens to me that is quite odd. Sometimes it happens that the same error (could not convert xxx.jpg to bmp) appears on projects that worked until 1 minute before. I need to shut down and reboot. What the hell is happening? Failed installation of RB? :?: :?: :?: :?:
