So I'm eventually thinking about buying Windows 8 for my RS projects.

From a developer's standpoint what are the differences between Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro?

Does it make any difference when using RS to develop for them?

I guess I should also ask from a users's standpoint as well - is the extra money for 8 Pro worth it?

Also, will RS apps run correctly on Windows 8 / Windows 8 Pro 64 bit (I assume yes)?

Does it have the necessary 32 bit libs for RS apps to run properly (since RS can't build 64 bit yet) ?

Any gotchas, setbacks, flickering issues on Windows 8 ?

I have little Windows experience and it often makes me foam at the mouth when using it :(

Thanks guys.

I just tested my Windows app I developed last year using RealStudio on my Windows 8 (64 Bit) and it works as it did on earlier version of Windows. You shouldn't face any issues running 32 Bit apps on a 64 Bit Windows. They do have an on-the-fly WOW64 (Windows 32 on Windows 64) subsystems built in. I see that many of the Windows apps I used are still 32 bit.

As always, with your RealStudio developed apps you will still need to include all the .dll files in the Libs folder with your EXE for it to work on any Windows platform.

As far as running RealStudio on Windows 8, it doesn't matter if you have the Windows 8 or the Pro edition. The Pro has just several additional "Enterprise" type add-ons such as the ability to be a Remote Desktop Server and accepts inwards connections and ability to participate in a Windows Server domain. There are some other features but non core to running RealStudio. Another thing is the Windows 8 can support up to 128gb RAM while the Pro edition can go up to 512gb RAM which I believe is not an issue for most, at least not within the next 12 months.

I am still getting used to the removal of the Start Menu. It sure is odd.

Ok.. how about the opposite question.

I abandoned Windows years ago in favor of OSX (and never regretted it). But should I decide to port some of my RS projects to windows.... Would the fact that they run under WInXP indicate that they will or might or won't run under WIn7 or Win8.

I don't wish to spend the money to get Win7/8 soley for the purpose of testing a Win version of my own apps. I have an older machine running XP and it is part of my network. If that is enough great... if not, then perhaps the Windows community won't get to see any of my new toys :)

I wouldn't worry. You should be good. I'm running all the versions of Windows from XP to 8 in both 32 and 64 bit flavors and I haven't had any issues.

As long as you aren't doing anything weird with the Windows API you will be fine. And looking at examples of your code in the past I do not envision you doing that.

You can download fully working trial-version of windows 8 which works for up to 90 days before you need to buy a license. You could use that and run it in a virtual machine and just re-install it when the time is up?

cross-platform freeware virtual machine: https://www.virtualbox.org/

One core requirement in deploying to Windows 7 and Windows 8 would be Code Signing your apps otherwise they would be prompted with how unsafe your apps are.

There ARE things you can get away with in XP that won't fly in 7/8. Most notable is file permissions ie., writing to the Program Files directory. XP allows it, but under 7/8 your app will fail silently. I'd really recommend testing in Windows 7.

Thanks Tim..... but $150 just to be able to test aint worth it... not to mention I'd probably have to buy another computer to be able to even run Win7

Windows runs nearly 90% of Computers world wide. If you are serious about selling software, Windows is a must.

Win7 will run in a virtual machine. You could run a copy for 30 days before it has to be activated.

For code signing, this thread is of interest: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=32715

I have never had anyone complain about my programs not being signed but I've not distributed a program that included sensitive information.

If you would like someone to test on Win Vista/7/8 just drop me a line and I will let you know if something is amiss.

Has anyone here successfully downloaded Microcrapsoftware version 8?

I tried downloading the 90 day free trial of Wincrap 8 and of course it doesn't work.
(Thanks to BitsInAWhiteBox for the Wincrap 8 download link btw)

Self edited my Wincrap 8 bitchfest.

Will try tomorrow on a friends Vista machine.

Damn I hate this company.

I'm probably going to be buying Windows 8 this week from Amazon unless someone knows of a better price?

I'm thinking the 64 bit non pro version. Windows 8 System Builder DVD 64-Bit on Amazon for $95.88 with free shipping. yay.

Are these install instructions for Mac pretty accurate or is there a better way?
http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/ ... s-8-on-mac

EDIT :
So those install Windows on Mac directions said to have Bootcamp 4.0 or newer and I've got Bootcamp 3 running on OS X 10.6.8 snow leopard.

Bootcamp mentions something about downloading the necessary support software for Windows...
Does anyone know what support files are needed and if Bootcamp 3 will get the correct support files for Windows 8?

I thought I could just create my own Windows partition and then use the Windows 8 install DVD to install it?

Has anyone here installed Windows on it's own partition on their Mac without using Bootcamp or with using the version of Bootcamp I got?

Can you share your setup experience and instructions?

It's probably simply done but I don't want to goof it up so help would be appreciated.

*note I'm not virtualizing at this time.

Are there any hidden gotchas I should know about before I purchase Windows 8?

I'm running my '09 Intel MBP core 2 duo.

Gross. I'm going to be an owner of Windows....

TIA.

just a thought.. depending on your windows development needs, have you consider microsoft technet subscription?

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms772428

Also.. as far as running windows on a mac, I have been very happy with virtual box.
