Actually I wanted to make a poll, but I can't find that function anywhere (maybe it is not possible for regular members). The question is: how do you use RealBasic? Do you use it as a consultant for finished projects or just to make prototypes? Or are you a hobbyist or small time programmer who creates programs to aid his work or hobby but not as a full-time job? Maybe you are not yet a RB-programmer but still learning to work as a consultant with RB?

I think it is interesting to know, as we don't see many finished products around here. So are they mainly made in-house and meant to stay in? Or did we miss some great programs that were created with RB?

Myself I am just a small time hobbyist who occasionally creates some programs to enlighten his daily job or just to have some programming fun.

The latter.

I've been using Real Studio for ten plus years as a consultant. We've done a lot of commercial vertical market apps, a few wide open commercial apps, and quite a few internal projects. Most of them have been cross-platform (Mac/Win). In the past year we've been using Web Edition a lot more to provide web applications that usually (but not always) talk to the desktop apps.

I use it commercial. It is great. I learned developing with realbasic, and now I learned c++, java, python and more, but RB is still the best one for me.

I make my living programming in RB. You won't see my apps on display because they're not "sexy", they just run the client's company and increase their profits.

I am one man business and making apps for sale on the Mac App Store.

I have been developing for Windows for 14 years now using another tool but wanted to jumped into the Mac environment and after evaluating several options, I found that Realbasic was the easiest to learn so hopping into it took only a little extra enough.

I have learnt to program with the help of this forum and the NUG, never had any training in programming. Started with RB2005.

I have a medical program that I use for myself and has now made it available for free, want to see what I've done? I would appreciate comments too. Can be downloaded here http://www.wix.com/lennoxjacob/obgynok

I use it for custom desktop and web application development for specific clients.
The applications are "commercial" but fairly specialised and so have a limited user base.
I did this for years in Visual Basic and FoxPro before that and I'm gradually switching over to RealBasic.
Hope to develop a few as commercial vertical market applications someday.
Cheers!

I have been a software engineer for many years in many different languages. Before I retired, I used RB to create marketing prototypes as well as utilities to assist in my job(s). Now, I use it mainly to create tools for my own use and to keep my aging brain from getting fuzzy.

We've used RealBasic for over 10 years to make commercial apps, two of which are in the mac app store.

Studiometry: http://www.oranged.net/studiometry
Accounted: http://www.oranged.net/accounted

Our programs would not be cross platform nor have anywhere near the current feature sets that they do were it not for how easy it is to rapidly develop in RB.

Fantastic! Great apps!

Do you use any third-party controls?

OK, figured it out on my own. I peeked into the Libs folder and found there lots of Monkeybread Software plugins.

Are there any other controls that you use?

Thank you very much! We've been using the MBS plugins for years and couldn't create the apps without them. We also use their DynaPDF plugin for creating PDFs from Studiometry.

Most of the custom controls and looks were creating using canvases. Even the fancy custom-looking listboxes (with variable row heights) are just a subclass of the built in canvas, like the one pictured on the right here:

You can really do a lot with the built-in controls in RealBasic, and anything we've ever needed that wasn't built in was in the Monkeybread Software Plugins.
