Hello all,

New to Linux, and I have to write a series of applications. The first is a small app to call a server and send a license key periodically. I created a console/service app, but the timer does not work well at all. I posted a different question regarding this problem yesterday but have not received any responses. So I thought I'd begin looking at it from a different direction.

To make my life easier is there a way to:
1. Create a standard app, but now show the form? Will this run in a Console environment?
2. For non console apps, what is the method to put icons into the System Tray (I realize this is a windows term but did not know the correct term to use for linux).

3. Can a Windowed app be created to always run - as a Service does, and equally difficult to stop?

Thank you!
Tim

Why not write a bash script and use cron to run it?

Thank you McDian.

The only issue with that is, I need the same app to run on Windoz and Mac (in the future) too.
Will have a look at Cron however, thanks again!

All 3 systems have scheduling and scripting available (well Windows I don't know how much you can do now...) You could use the Linux machine to push out to all the systems with a single script. I run a Linux desktop in a Windows / Macintosh environment and am able to push data from my Linux machine to Windows and Mac without too much trouble. Just a thought.
