Hi everyone!

I was thinking of creating something like GDM which allows a user to login to the system in a graphical way.
But the problem is I have no idea how to make my app first check that the password is correct, the username is no problem, and then start the specified windowmanager as the selected user.

Anyone has any ideas?

To check the password against the users name, you would need to save the user name and password in a text file, or preferably, a database. You would need a preference file to save each user's setting. That, again, would be best done with a database. Each setting that can be customized would need it's own field in the database.

When the user enters a username, the application would load the password associated with that username into a hidden edit field and compare the user supplied password with the one that was saved in the database.

Jennifer, that is way too simplistic and way too insecure.

If you wish to write a replacement for GDM then be prepared to follow a LOT of standards on how to communicate with the various subsystems and how to verify the password with the PAM subsystem etc.

Good luck :-) you are going to need lotsa it.
