Post subject:  Does REAL STUDIO run slowly on Linux?

I'm new to both Real Studio and Linux (Ubuntu). For my job I was given a good amount of RealBasic code that some freelancer wrote. (The .rbp file is 1.6 MBs). The program sometimes takes a really long time to accomplish functionality. Does anyone else feel like RealBasic is really slow on Linux? Any tips?

How much RAM do you have in your computer?

PS: Whatever you have, double it.

There are lots of potential responses here but the "Memory" response is most likely the answer that may speed you up.

I run Ubuntu 9.04 on an AMD Dual core machine with frequency control that speeds up the processor on demand from 1 Ghz to 2.1 Ghz. But, mostly runs at 1 Ghz. I find that both the RB - IDE (all versions) and compiled RB projects run slower than Windows OS equivalents on the same machine.

One other thing to check in Ubuntu (if you haven't) is the video mode. On my machine I have no choice but to run in the slower default video driver that does not support extended graphics. This causes video refresh of some RB controls (most notably the listbox) to create flashing. Check your preferences in Ubuntu and, if you can, select extended graphics to speed up some things.

I've not noticed it to be slow either in VM's (on my MacBook with 1Gb RAM assigned) or on real hardware (an Intel Mac Mini and Intel x86 CPU).
RAM definitely impacts how fast things happen as it reduces thrashing.
More is better.

So yeah, I went up from 0.5 to 1.5 GBs of RAM. Linux and REAL Studio are now both a lot faster.

It runs slow for me. I am running Core2Quad Q9550 8gb of ram and Ubuntu 10.10. I already know its not a 64bit application but I wouldn't think it should run slow.

Runs slower on Linux compared to Windows for me but not so much so that it's a big problem. Some things I can do in Windows can't be done in Linux because of the speed difference so I take that into account when building a project I expect to run in Linux too.

I recently upgraded my macbookpro to 8 Gigs ram because the 2 gigs I had was not enough to properly run OS X 10.6, REAL Studio and MBS plugins.

Things ran fine but I was using more ram than I had which slowed things down.

If I run in KDE... sloooowwww as molasses. But if I run in blackbox, Gnome or Enlightenment, pretty fast. That's been my experience so far. And I am on a quad core 3GHz 8GB RAM 64bit OpenSuSE system with raid drives all with a minimum of 32MB cache.
