I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and would like to connect to a MSSQL database running on Windows Server 2003. Some help with the required Linux ODBC drivers and DSNLess connection string would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, connecting and accessing the database from Windows is not an issue. In Ubuntu I'm a bit lost in regards to any changes needed to the connection string and which ODBC driver(s) to use.

Thanks for your quick reply!

I'm already familiar with DSN-less connection strings in Windows. Since you referred to that topic should I assume that they are identical in Linux? I assumed they weren't since it's a different OS with different drivers.

Which ODBC driver should I use in Ubuntu to connect to a MSSQL database?

With a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04, is there anything else that I need to install/configure so the ODBC driver in Ubuntu can find the Windows computer hosting MSSQL?

For those not familiar with connection strings, here is a great site with lots of examples.

Figured it out!

In Ubuntu 10.04 launch the Ubuntu Software Center, enter "FreeTDS" into the search field, and install "tdsodbc" which has the description "ODBC driver for connecting to MS SQL and Sybase SQL servers". Here is a sample connection string along with a link to the FreeTDS user guide.

"Driver=/usr/lib/odbc/libtdsodbc.so; Server=Your_SQL_Server_IP_Address; Database=Your_Database; UId=Your_User_Id; Pwd=Your_Password"

http://www.freetds.org/userguide/

If anyone has alternate solutions for connecting to a MS SQL database from Ubuntu, please share them.
