Hi all,

First go with Linux here.

I posted this on the NUG earlier today and then i found this forum. so i apologize for the cross post.
I also wanted to say regarding the recent topic about chr(13) being converted to a chr(10) that i hit that problem and was able to fix it with the work around in that thread. so thanks to the user "CPS" my device is an arduino board that is using the FTDI chip as well. anyway here goes...

I have an app that is working well on Mac and Windows. I installed the latest version of ubuntu and the latest RB IDE for linux. My app listens to a serial port and updates a listbox and a few static texts when a message comes in which is once per second. When I run the program in the debugger everything works as expected. When I build the app then launch the newly built app. It doesn't update the screen unless I roll my mouse pointer over the app's window. I don't even have to click just keep moving the the mouse arrow around in the window. If I stop moving the app stops updating.
My guess is that the data available event is not firing when I'm not rolling the mouse around in the window, since everything the app does keys off of getting data from the serial port.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Jeff

Not sure what the problem might be, but you may be able to "tickle" the serial port with a timer. I.e. create a timer that runs periodically and poll the serial port in the timer's action event. Each time the port is polled, it is forced to fire the DataAvailable event.

I don't think that this is a serial port problem. I have made some applications that using the serial port and the DataAvailable Event, and they are running well (I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and 8.4). Can you make a minimal version of your program, just usig a serial port and the DataAvailable Event? I can check it on my system.
I also made a simple test program that works on my system. It shows the data received by a serial port in a StaticText field. You can download it at http://www.v-control.com/TestSerial_Lin ... ilable.rbp
