Since I've been looking at macs I found a couple of bargains and this one I couldn't resist, it's a MacBookPro3,1 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17“ with 4GB RAM and 320GB HD. Not the greatest system on earth but it's in a like-new state and for $250 I could't resist

Everything was going good until I actually started using the computer, testing a bit of everything I found two problems: I can't for the life of me find the “at“ and “exclamation“ characters. I have searched the web, read forum after forum and spent a lot of time typing key combinations.

Thought I could ask you Mac gurus if you knew where I could find such keys. I'm running an american english keyboard but a latin american mapping. I can't even change the keyboard language

Any help will be much appreciated.

Actually nope... I tried alt-2, alt-q, alt-abcdefghijklm, then I tried the combination of option+alt+everysinglekeyonthisdarnkeyboard and I can't find either....

But thanks for the almost instant reply (Add exclamation character which I can't find on my keyboard).

I get an inverted exclamation character, which is used in Spanish but not in English.

This is what I get with Shift-1: ¡

Looks like a subscripted i hehehe

Locale settings are set differently than you expect then. Was the system wiped before you purchased it?

No it was not. I'll upgrade to Lion tomorrow and try my luck with that. I can't change the keyboard settings or the language on this one 10.6.3

Thanks for your help (add exclamation character)

If I were you, I'd absolutely be doing a clean install.

This Mac was originally purchased in the US so I'm guessing it's the US English version, just like this one:

I'm really frustrated and I didn't have the time to go to the apple store to purchase a Lion install CD.

Thanks for the help Norman.

ElChupete, Alt+L gives me the ¬ character. I guess I purchased a Mac with no emailing capabilities! LOL!

A US Mac will, by default, have the same key mappings as a PC. Do a clean install, and you should be all set.

If you have any OS X instal disk I'd just reinstall after perhaps wiping the drive & it should be good to go

I was at the apple store today, got interested in a wireless keyboard, a "stand" for my laptop and a wireless mouse, purchased them all.

Then when I got home I realized I had forgotten the ONE thing I was supposed to buy: A OS X LION INSTALL CD!!!! Good grief! Shiny things distract me.
