Having problems with running an image analysis program on Windows 7 64 bit with > 4 GB of RAM. Opening the software leads to a stack overflow error (or something like that)--it's hard to say exactly because the message appears and then error-message windows start popping up on top of each other so fast that you only have a moment to read the message.

The software works well on computers with 4 GB or less of RAM - and no problems on other Windows platforms.

Others have this problem? Suggested fix?

Might have something to do with RS being 32 bit.

That being said I have no issues on a 64Bit 8Gb Memory PC.

Being an "image analysis" program how much memory is being consumed?
I don't think I have never had an app use more than 4Gb but with imaging I guess its possible.

I guess you have tried debugging etc to see if you can find where it breaks?

I have used RS (compiled) applications on a Windows 7 64bit machine with 24GB of RAM and never had such problem. I can't tell how much RAM my program was using but I can say that it would not run on my 4GB laptop because of the excessive use of RAM but it would run ok on the other machine (the one having 24GB).

Just to add some more information.

Other than the obvious; don't run it on that platform (which I know is easier said than done). Have you tried running it under Windows 7, but under the compatibility stuff? I don't have my W7 PC here (only XPs at work), but I think W7 can run programs under some compatibility stuff (i.e. emulate the previous platform). Just a thought (not really addressing the root cause though).

Yes, Real Studio problem.

I am finding some people with Windows 7 64 bit > 4 GB have no problem running, but this was a problem at an education workshop in June (the software, AnalyzingDigitalImages, is available for free at https://sites.google.com/a/globalsystem ... e/download).

Also, if it is a memory problem, why is it running consistently on 4 GB and less RAM? And when it does have a problem, it is immediately at start up - no images loaded.

Since this software is intended for education, and so the classroom, teachers won't install if too many hoops are needed to run the software, so finding/recommending 32 bit emulators is not a good solution for this.

Thanks,

John

There's no 32 bit emulator required to run on 64 bit Windows.
Windows includes technology called WOW64 which lets 32 bit applications run unaltered on 64 bit systems.
Without knowing what version of RB was used to create the ADC executable I'd be guessing at what's wrong.

The version that is posted on the website was created in 8/22/11, and I am diligent using the latest release. I made another version using 2011 release 4.3 (which is the current release on their website), and this also had the same problem. Runs fine otherwise.

Without knowing what you're trying to do (like maybe open an image that takes more than 4Gb ?) it's hard to say why this might be happening

Currently, it states there is a stack overflow when just opening the software - and this cascades many, many times. But, curiously, with 4 GB of RAM and less, no overflow problem.

Try changing the compatibility settings of the EXE to something like XP. This won't fix the root cause but it may address the symptom.

Well a stack overflow IS something that if you run it in the RB debugger you can catch that error & see whats up
I'd give that a try

Even if I am programming on a Mac? I don't get this error on OSX, but will the debugger still help? Sorry, not familiar with this.

No, I thought you were dealing with a deployed app on a user's Windows box.

I'd try it on WIndows to be accurate
Even a trial license for Windows might point out an issue
