A new book has just been created and will be made public soon (within the next few days)

I Wish I Knew How To...
Program Word 2010 with REALStudio in Windows
July 2012 Edition (1.0)
By Eugene Dakin

Author Website:http://scispec.ca/Realbasic/Publish/Publish.htm
Publishing Website (soon): http://great-white-software.com/rblibrary/index.php?main_page=index&manufacturers_id=34

Book Structure Details
There are 221 pages from cover to cover
Over 80 working examples
With 13 book chapters

The book index and Table of Contents can be downloaded at the authors website so that you can view some of the details before purchasing.

Summary
This book has been written as a guide and reference for programmers with REALStudio to program in Word 2010. There are no plugins, dynamic link libraries (dll), COM, or Active X portions to add. The control that is packaged with REALStudio in Windows provides the functionality. This book is a live document and will be updated. There are many chapters, pages, and examples containing the complete code of examples such as: files, modifying text data, selection, movement, editing, Table of Contents, and more. Many screenshots have been taken to show you the results of changes in code, with a full index to help you find topics and reference information.Word is a good, simple, and familiar alternative to the many available reporting programs for REALStudio.

Have great weekend everyone!

I updated the link to reflect the legal name of Realbasic, not REALbasic.

Here is the new link to the Authors Website:http://www.scispec.ca/Realbasic/Publish/Publish.htm

Hi,

Is "program Excel with realstudio in windows" the same book as "I wish I knew how to program Excel 2010 with realstudio in windows"?

When I go to the vendor site, there is no mention of the book entitled "I wish......."

Thanks.

Thanks - I just purchased it.

My workplace uses word 2003, and I wanted to learn how to program it via realbasic. Does your word 2010 book have any info at all regarding word 2003, or is it 100% only for word 2010?

Thanks.

Hello,

Thanks for the good question. Although most of the examples create the new *.docx file, the book does discuss and have an example on how to work with the older *.doc file. If you have any difficulty with creating the older file, feel free to contact me and I will be able to help.

There are some new functions in Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010 that will not work in Word 2003.

Happy to help,

Eugene

Do you need to have MS word and Excel installed to create docs of both type?

Hello,

You can either install Office which has most Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, or you can install the free reader versions of Word http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=4 or Excel http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=10.

Just to make sure this works on a specific computer, install the free versions and try and run one of the Real Studio sample programs in the Example folder.

Sincerely,

Eugene

Ok, so the installation of the reader, probably installs some DLL's that are required?

I would like to be able to create word and excel files without having them installed (since I am not willing to purchase it). then I can use the reader to view my results

am I correct?

Hello,

I am pretty sure that there are quite a few dll's added when the reader is installed. The Word and Excel executable files are also installed and likely enables the ability to work with plugins (which I am assuming is the way Real Studio interacts with the Microsoft programs) :)

After testing the readers on fresh installations of Windows, the Real Studio programs correctly worked and interacted with Word and Excel. Having said that, things do change and it did work. This is why I asked you to test it with free code and the free readers :) (free is good, right?)

Hopefully this works for you on your system.

Sincerely,

Eugene

RS is more of a hobby for me but a few years ago I wrote a quoting system for a friend of mine using RS and Word. So, this will give me a chance when Xojo comes out to spiff it up a bit.
