Post subject:  Window not visable

Have a user of my application that has reported a problem as follows:
Quote:
Our computer is running Windows7 64 bit and is running on a Dell Inspiron 1725.

Our computer is shared by creating "user" accounts. After installing
the program, “user1" (my wife) can open RV Care in a window, and it
appears to be working properly. We need to convert our data to begin
using it to completely verify that statement.

The issue is that when I (user2) try to open the program, the only
action is that the RV Car Logbook icon appears on the taskbar, and
when the cursor is paused over the icon, the "program window" is
visible, but not usable. If I click on the icon, another icon appears
on the taskbar, etc. The program never opens in a window.

Other programs work just fine, I uninstalled and reinstalled the RV
Care program. No difference. My wife looked at the program and she
knows computers better than I do. She looked at the properties of the
program for both users and they appear to be the same. Perhaps there
is a "hidden" property that she could not find.

She also looked at Microsoft Help for an answer. She got a reply that
suggested a corrupt user file. However, all other programs seem to be
working OK.

I am not currently at home (in Florida) in an RV for another month of so. Do not have my PC, only a Mac, with me.

My application only has a database file in the user Document dir. and a Preference file in the user's Preference dir. The application is shiped with only an application (in an installer).

I don't have a clue as what or where to start to fix the problem.

Help Please!

I don't know the 'right' answer, but here are some random things I would be trying in your circumstances.

Almost certainly the installer has created the application and any support files in areas which are local to the account which was used to install it.
Have the husband install it while logged in as himself, to see what happens.

It is possible to right click on a program and 'run as' , which would mean he could have his wife enter her login details , and the app would launch thinking it was his wife that was running it.

His account may be a guest account, rather than an administrator account: try upping his privileges on the machine.

The machine may be set up with 2 'screens', (if they are a two monitor or external monitor family) and the application may be opening on the second screen. Try disabling the second screen.

I was just reading another post Subj:MsgBox from Inactive Window Hangs App, which kind of sound like my problem. And I have 2 question.

What does alt-tab do?

If I use MsgBox with a window being open is that a problem?

That should have been "NO window open"

alt+tab is a way of moving to another application, the next one in a loop.

Let's say I have firefox, MSWord and adobe pdf reader open. If I am currently working on Word and press alt+tab it will bring Word backwards and give the focus to another application, for example pdf reader. If I press alt+tab again it will move to firefox, then to MSWord again... in a loop. If you press alt+tab and keep alt pressed, you will be shown a visual menu with all the programs you can navigate to using alt+tab.

As for the reason why you are getting the non showing window problem, the first thing that came to my mind was the possibility that Kermit already mentioned. Many times, during the instalation of a program you will be given the option to either install is just for one user or make it available for all of them.

Thanks.
That what I thought, the alt+tab key.

The problem was a bad preference file, user deleted, then application ran ok.
