Is there any way to load Windows Media files in QuickTime on Windows? If not, is there code to convert it to a QuickTime readable format? I would love to be able to load Windows Media files in my program.

I believe the MoviePlayer control has the ability to use both QuickTime and WMP on Windows. See the PlayerType property.

I want to play/load it in QuickTime rather than play it thru a WMV control.

On a Mac you can convert the WMV to a MOV with flip4mac I think.

I was hoping to run this on Windows. On a Mac, you can play/load WMV in QT using Flip4Mac without any conversion.

Maybe I'm not being clear...Basically I want to be able to edit wmv files on Windows (with my program). I'm not looking for a third party conversion app. Maybe a plugin to convert wmv or a way to load it as a movie class so I can call all the QT APIs on that movie.

I'd gladly pay someone good money to develop such a plugin...

What you need is flip4mac for Windows.

And a plugin can only do the work if some library behind exists already.

There's a Windows version of Flip4Mac?

No. FWIW, I'm not aware of anything that meets your criteria.

I've wrestled with cross-platform video issues for some time.

My understanding is as follows:
1. On most Macs, you can play QuickTime .mov videos, but not .wmv videos.
2. If Flip4mac is installed, then Macs can play .wmv videos.
3. On Windows, you can only play QuickTime .mov videos IF QuickTime/iTunes has been installed.
4. There is no Windows equivalent of Flip4Mac, so the Windows version of QuickTime can not play .wmv files--must play with the Windows Media Player.
5. I don't believe the Windows Media Player can play QuickTime .mov files on Windows--must use the QuickTime player.

For a cross-platform RB program that plays videos via the movieplayer, the options I've used are:
1. Set the movieplayer to QuickTime, deliver video as .mov, and require QuickTime on windows
2. Set the movieplayer to the default media player, deliver the video as .wmv, and require Flip4Mac on Macs
3. Set the movieplayer to default and deliver the video as .avi files.
(This was our preferred solution some years ago, but AVI has fallen way behind in terms of compression/quality and has limited CODEC support on Vista so I no longer use .avi files.)
4. Or, if you can deliver separate Mac and Windows versions of your product, you could set the media player to default and deliver QuickTime .mov files with the Mac version and Windows .wmv files with the Windows version.

Since most of our customers use Windows, we usually use option #2 above. However, we keep thinking about going to QuickTime as per option #1. In the few situations when it is feasible for us, we use option #4.

Maybe that will help somebody. ;-)

Has there ever been any change to this problem? Last I tried I could load a WMV movie in the movieplayer but I could not do anything with it, like make it loop, select a 5 second clip, etc. Is there some way to convert a WMV to QT when it's loaded into a RB app?
