Don't put this code in a timer. Put it in keydown event.

the problem is, that all other combinations like ALT+e orf ALT+t will fire the keydown event, but ALT+R doesn't for any reason. WHYYYYYYYYYY????

A menu item shortcut perhaps?

What is your code to test for the key?
When "alt" (opt on a Mac) is pressed, you get another ascii char. for instance the "r" now becomes ®
