How does one do it? Do you always need an external tool to create 3D objects or can you create them in code?

What 3D tools do people like and use?

As of r3, you can create them in code. Check the release notes.

I have been looking at this today and I tried the demo, I was slightly frustrated by the inability to try an object from Cheetah in RB. However after looking though their forums I felt a bit more comfortable.

Export to OBJ then.

Don't consider yourself a sore loser because you use Windows, I looked at Blender as was blown away by it. I would use that on the Mac if I could figure out how to get objects from it into RB3D, but I cannot find any information on exporting (or importing to that nature) 3DMF files. So I am presuming that this is isn't possible. However if someone does know how to do it, I would love to know how because my girlfriend and I are planning to work on this game together and so we will need a 3D modeler that will run on Windows and export (and import) 3DMF.

You can use this:

3DMF Workshop v0.6d

It can convert obj or 3DS into 3DMF. Its a nice little app.

Hate to be a bitch but it's best not to link directly to files. I tag all releases with version numbers and delete old archives from the server soon after new ones are released, so direct links have finite life spans...

For the sake of this thread's posterity, here's a link that won't die: 3DMF Workshop (don't worry, there are no ads or internet boogymen on my site)

On the "free" 3D modelling front, nothing beats Wings 3D and Blender IMHO (on Windows and/or Mac). Wings for the initial modelling, Blender for tweaks, UV mapping and exporting. Good stuff...
