I have a timer on my form and i use it to generate events that cause OpenGL to redraw the scene.

It seems that it crashes only when drawscene is called from the timer.

Any thoughts on why?

Sorry my fault... Recursion.
The OpenGLSurface has a render routine.
I don't think you can render outside of that routine.

By the way why is a timer necessary?
Is there no double buffering on an opengl surface?

Double buffering with OpenGL isn't like double buffering with a canvas. You can either call Render with a timer to keep the FPS running or you can just call Render when you change something that needs to be rendered if you are using it for something that's less interactive than a game.
