Hello,

I am trying to get a web app running on a VPS on Dreamhost. It was segfaulting but after I installed the 32 bit libraries, that stopped. Now it appears that it can't find the libraries (or something else is happening), and I'm stuck. The specific error is:

Runtime Error

I just bought the Web Edition and was hoping to develop some web apps, but like I said I'm stuck. The apps run just fine on my Mac through the browser, so I am assuming that it is not a problem with the code itself. I am compiling to Linux for the webserver.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look at next (including whether I need to move to a new web hosting company)?

Thanks...

If you would like a free development hosting account, you can send me a message at realdevspot.com (private message) and I will link a hosting account to your profile for use. The hosting server is specifically designed for RS webapps.

Did you set the app libs directory and app.cgi permissions to 755, the config.cfm to 777, the main executable to 755? Generally the entry-point error occurs when not all of the required lib files are found (or cannot be accessed by the application).

About 6 months ago I posted this on the mailing list:
http://support.realsoftware.com/listarc ... 00187.html

It's something I need to follow up on with Real Software. A LiveCode user found my post in a web search and contacted me because he was having issues on Dreamhost as well. He investigated it further and found that...

Dreamhost's implementation of the XFS file system uses 64-bit inodes, and maps calls to the system function fstat() to fstat64(), which returns a struct containing integers too large for a 32-bit app to handle.

Any way...find out if your VPS is on XFS or ext3. If it's on XFS, that may be the problem.

@simulanics - Thanks so much for the offer for hosting. I did try setting permissions as noted in the documentation and even tried the permissions that you suggested (I am a unix admin, so I knew permissions can cause issues). Unfortunately that did not fix the issue. Dreamhost Support was less than helpful and actually suggested that I move to another hosting company even though I've been a long-time customer in good standing.

@taylor-design - Thanks for the information. I am pretty sure that the system is probably on XFS and that is most likely the cause of the problem. When I did an strace on the program I uploaded (the MapViewer2 Example), it was calling fstat64.

Ultimately I gave up after troubleshooting after more than 4 days because neither Dreamhost or Real Software could provide any useful information to help diagnose the issue.

I am now hosting my app with InMotionHosting.com (which is a recommended provider by Real Software) and am in the process of moving all of my websites from Dreamhost so that I can terminate my relationship with them. The experience with both Dreamhost Support and Real Software Support was overall negative, but end result is that my app is working, so I guess that's all that counts.

Thanks!

I had a DreamHost VPS account for most of a year and had nothing but problems. When the whole server went down for most of a day, only one of three apps works. After four days of trying to make them work again, I moved everything to HardHat Hosting. The only problem I ever have now is forgetting to set the permissions. Its cheaper that DreamHost too.
