I'd like to write a desktop application for managing photos. One idea I had was to have a little fun with Foursquare's API. Foursquare, like most popular web services, has an API but requires OAUTH authentication and communicating over SSL (https).

From what I understand, this can not be done with the personal edition. I don't know if I want to spend another $200 to upgrade (or whatever the upgrade price is) for some of my toy apps.

I'd really like my desktop app to run on Mac and Windows.

If this is true, is there a way around this that doesn't violate any license agreement with Real Software and not make my bank account shrink?

I'm also a Java developer so I could probably do the networking stuff there but could I call that from RB? And would that be unethical?

Trying to do the right thing here.

Thanks.

I think that once 2013 R1 comes out and personal licenses are converted
to desktop you will have this available provided your personal licence
covers you for the next release.

Ah. This is what I needed.

Thanks.

Looks like I will be able to use the HTTPSecureSocket. Which should allow me to do SSL API calls.

However, I don't see the DB support in the personal->desktop license upgrade.

Not a showstopper, but it does make creating open source DB clients a no-go.

Well if you're on windows you can use ADO to connect to any database you want using ADO, even from the personal edition. I assume that there are similar options on OSX and Linux
