I am trying to work with SMTP.gmail.com

I continue to get error messages

530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first.

How can I use SMTPSocket to issue this command?

You can't. You need a SSLSocket which is shipped as part of RB Pro Editions.

I have RB Studio. I upgraded from Pro (free).

Use SMTPSecureSocket, set secure to true, port to 465.

You;ll need the username, password etc.
I've only used RB again for a month but got gmail access working fine.
dim emessage as new EmailMessage
email.Address = "smtp.gmail.com"
email.Username = "me@gmail.com"
email.Password = "Not telling you"
email.Port = 465
emessage.Subject = "test"
emessage.AddRecipient ("who@where.com")
emessage.BodyHTML = "Test Message"
email.Messages.Append(emessage)
email.SendMail
emessage = nil

Something like that. I believe there is a bug in that with the SMPTSecure, you can only use port 465.

Cheers
