I have a combo box that has a set of predefined categories that are populated in the open event of the form. I then do a SELECT DISTINCT from a table and add any additional categories that are found in the table.

Now the question. If the user adds a new category (not in the predefined or DISTINCT groups), that new entry does not show when another record is updated. How do I tell if the entry is an addition that was not already in the list versus a selection of one of the existing categories.

Surely I don't have to rebuild the list after each change?

thanks, and looking forward to Xojo...

you don't HAVE to... but you might find it is quicker to just repopulate the list, than going thru the hassle of figuring out what is there and what is not.
