I have tried to read the documentation on folderitems. Unfortunately the docs refer to an example project that no longer exists (Property List)

How can I determine what Type the Folder items.

(Specifically I am looking for a "Folder" on mac OSX)

When I call MyFolderItem.type I get "" (a blank string)

To detect whether a FolderItem is a file or a directory, check its Directory property:
If SomeFolderItem.Directory Then
MsgBox("A directory")
Else
MsgBox("A file")
End If

folderitem.Type refers to a type which you define in the FileTypes panel. Once defined there, the file type will be available to identify different files, both those created by your app and standard ones (i.e. rtf)
