Interesting. First time I've heard of Delphi XE3. I've be curious to learn more about it and hear about the developer experience.

As a Real Studio consultant for over ten years I think it's a great tool. It's not without its warts (what dev environment isn't?) but I've put dozens of commercial apps out for ourselves and clients. To say it 'just works' is a bit too simple but we've found few things we couldn't work around. Our clients love having 1 code base that works on Mac, Windows, and Linux (and web to some extent too).

A guy walks into a FORD dealership and asks "Hey what do you think of Chevy?"

As a Mac user Delphi is underwhelming.
I downloaded it and installed it on 2 Windows machines ( an Windows 8 VM and a real Vista machine) and could not get it to generate anything that ran on anything - not even on the machine it was one - much less an exe that ran on a Mac.
Their tech support was useless.

I used to love Delphi 1 thru 3
I had high hopes of cross platform around the time of Kylix (an attempt to cross compile Delphi for Linux)

I'd like to love Delphi XE, but when I tried it earlier this year, my head was spinning by the time I went through all the requisites to get it off the starting grid.
What used to be a simple self contained ide/compiler ,( like RS ) has 'evolved' into a do-it-yourself self-assembly kit of bits and pieces, only a little of which was the pascal compiler.

My experience was much the same as npalardy: downloaded massive amounts of stuff, and failed to get anything working.
Which was a shame, because I really wanted to love it.
And the price... ouch..

If I could have grabbed a VM with a working installation already on it, maybe I'd have done better. ;)

What a way to say hello DaveS... Bad manners.

Is possible to go into a FORD dealership and ask "Hey what can you tell me about the differences between Chevy and FORD?

and the dealer will tell you the pros about FORD. As a good dealer is normal no know another brands then the dealer can say cons against the others.

We are not dealers. We are programmers. DaveS if you can't help in any post then don't repply...

Have a good night...

And welcome Primoz128

I have been using Delphi since v1 but only got serious since v5 and have recently upgraded to XE2 specifically for developing my Windows apps both 32 and 64 bits. It is certainly a breeze to work with and since it has been a Windows Only development tool for a long time, they have gotten it right in that area. The single file exe which it compiles doesn't suffer from the flashing issues and visual controls does get refreshed during a loop without having to apply timers and threads. It does have a larger pool of 3rd party components which you can used to enhance your programming. However that said and done, they are new in the Mac and iOS platform and the apps which is churned out is sluggish and is simply not native. They are still a work in progress in this area.

RS however was developed initially as a Mac development tool and subsequently branch to support windows and Linux platforms. For Mac, I would say that RS is light years again of the game probably only second to Xcode but is certainly easier to code and makes programming for the Mac a breeze.

Do you prefer Delphi for windows programming?

Personally, yes. I did some cross platform apps with RealStudio and now recoding them in Delphi.

For me, it would be Windows programming in Delphi and Mac programming in RealStudio

Delphi is ridiculously expensive.

That's one thing. Another problem is their EULA. The Delphi licence is declared void when you move to another country.

I was planning to upgrade to Delphi XE2 last year when I happened to read the EULA just before I left Ireland fro Switzerland. I was lucky. I wouldn't risk it again.

Technically Delphi is probably ahead of REALbasic, but REALbasic has garbage collection and native controls. Delphi controls are native on Windows (if you choose the VCL framework) but not native on any platform when you choose the crossplatform FireMonkey framework.

If you like Pascal, I recommend FreePascal and Lazarus. But Delphi is dead for me.

There is also MonoDevelop:

Gtk# offers reasonably well-looking applications on Unix, Windows and Mac OS and you can always choose a completely native GUI toolkit for each platform.
