If I have an array of controls and "close" one of them, are the remaining ones renumbered (i.e. re-indexed)?

Though I could just answer your question, you might get more out of it this way. if you can't get the answer from this sample come back and I'll give it to you.

Put an array of 3 pushbuttons on a page called Buttons

In the action event code

me.close

put a breakpoint there. run the program and click on Button(1) continue the program, click on the Button(2) and now when the debugger stops what does it say the index is ?

Array will be re-indexed. Otherwise a null number will come forth. It will be a trap.
