Post subject:  what's the picture size needed to create A4

This is a question I've been wanting to know for a while...

If I want to create a picture that is going [rint out something that fits on an A4 piece of paper, what would the dimensions of that picture be...

This picture has all sorts of pictures being drawn on top of it.... So, I need to know what the picture size would have to be to render nicely to an A4 printout

While A4 is a standard format an pixels can easily be calculated, the printable area may differ from printer to printer. Thus, I'd recommend to use PrinterSetup and OpenPrinterDialog to get an appropriate Graphics object you can directly draw onto.

It will also vary based on the user's margin settings.

I believe the default is 72 ppi (pixels per inch) but depending on your printer you can achieve much higher than this.
A4 paper is 8.5 x 11 inches. Doing some simple math your should be able to figure it out :-)

A4 is a metric size, 210mm x 297mm, or roughly 8.3 x 11.7 inches. Of course, the printable area will vary.

I'm using right now a picture of 1240x1745

using photoshop, it tells me that at
300dpi it's 2480x3408
72dpi it's 595x842

so, the default for the printer is 595x842?

That would give a full sized A4?

I just adjusted it so it's now 1240x1704
What's your advice?
there like about 7 tools in my app that create printouts - so I need to get this right :)

1240x1704 is fine, if the image is set to 150dpi (the minimum I would use for printing purposes).

2480x3408 @ 300dpi is better for printing.
595x842 @ 72dpi is for viewing on a monitor (72dpi being the default standard for viewing images). This is not recommended settings for printing.
