One of my customers is getting the error up, informing him that my program is not compatible with the version of Windows he's running. I assume this means I need to release a 32 bit aswell as a 64 bit version of my program? If so, how do I do this? I don't see anything in the build options.

Real Studio does not yet build 64-bit applications. It only creates 32-bit x86 applications.

The work to switch to using the LLVM compiler, which is still underway, will allow Real Studio to create native 64-bit applications at some point in the future. For more information, see this blog post:

Update on LLVM

With that said, 32-bit applications run just fine on Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64. They may not work on Windows XP x64, but that was not commonly used.

What is the error that your customer is getting?

He sent me a screenshot, but rather than clogging up the forum with a screen, I'll type in the exact error ....

'The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher'

He's the only one who's had this error so maybe it's something wrong with his Windows setup?

Perhaps it could be a Windows installation problem, but I'm not sure what it would be. Googling the above message didn't turn up anything obvious to check.

Thoughts:
  • What version of Windows is this (XP, Vista, 7)? Windows XP x64 has been known to have weird issues like this.
  • Are you using any drivers that could be missing from the users computer?

No drivers, it's a basic RB program with no addons or anything.

I'll talk to the user to see if he knows of any issues with his PC, or if this happens with other programs he uses.

Sounds more like a corrupted exe.

Is this during installation? You can't use a 32bit installer on Win 64

I think you read that wrong. 16-bit installers and 32-bit kernel extensions are not supported on Win64. 32-bit installers (and 32-bit applications) work fine.

It can't be a corrupted exe because he uses the same download link as my other customers and nobody else has had this problem. Must be something with his PC I think.

What I read was

"However, the kernel does not support 16-bit applications, 32-bit installers, and 32-bit kernel mode drivers." In the Brief

So I don't know, I just click 64 bit on the installer when it's going to be sent to a 64 bit system

I see the brief does mention 32bit installers. That has to be a typo. The details below specifically mention 16-bit installers. And I've had no trouble running 32-bit installers on 64-bit Windows. If they didn't work then everyone would need to have separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers and that is clearly not necessary. Firefox is still 32-bit and only has one installer, for example: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/sy ... ments.html

File corruption often happens during download and does not affect the copy on the server. Common causes of corrupted downloads are:
1. Bad network drivers on the user's machine.
2. Network card borderline.
3. Wireless internet connection with interference.

I would recommend the user clear their cache and re-download the file.

He's had the problem with several versions of the program so it's not just one corrupted download, if it is that. Still, it could be a continuing problem with his machine so I'll ask him to check into it. Presumably if this is a constant problem on his machine, he'd have problems downloading just about anything, so I could ask him to try a download from the internet and if that fails too, it's his machine?

If it is several versions then a corrupted download is unlikely. Are you using any custom controls or windows API features? It sounds like it is time to invest in a cheap Win64 machine for yourself to test. If it works on your machine then it is likely a conflict with some customization on the user's machine.
