I have 2007r5 (Win) and whenever I try to start it displays the spash screen -loading framework - then it crashes and the windows "Send Error Report" thing appears.

I've tried re-running the rb installer and selected the "Repair" option. Didn't help. So I un-installed and did a full re-install but that didn't help either.

Anyone had a similar problem ? Is it anything to do with Windows XP SP3 ?

Anyone have any ideas ?

Thanks
Ian

If you ever ran a newer version of RB on your machine, your registry is poisoned.

Run the newer version of RB and build the following project from Aaron Ballman:

http://ramblings.aaronballman.com/2008/ ... blems.html

that newer project will clean the registry.

Otherwise, you have to clean all of the RB stuff out of the registry yourself.

Also in your "application data" folder in Windows, try removing the cache information under the realbasic projects folder.

Other threads here have solved this same type of problem in the past, do a search on the forums.

I've never used any other version of RB - Never even installed any updates.

I don't have any other version of RB and if I try to load ANY project then RB crashes so I can't do what you're suggesting.

Try cleaning the Real application data folder in your users, application data folder (normally a hidden folder).

Also, a search of the forums indicates that 2007r2 was more stable, you might try downgrading to that one. Real can send you one on a CD for a small fee.

Try cleaning the Registry by hand for any RealBasic or Real entries.

Thanks for all your help so far - still no luck though.

I uninstalled Realbasic

Checked that the \Program Files\Real Basic\ folder had gone.

Deleted the RealBasic App Data folders

Ran RegEdit and removed all RealSoftware and RealBasic entries from the registry.

Installed RealBasic

Started Realbasic and it displayed the license agreement telling me about only installing on two computers etc (haven't seen that since the very first install last year)

It displays the RealBasic 2007 splash window
Loading Artwork
Loading Framework
Crash !!.

You don't happen to have QuickTime installed, do you? There was a version that Apple released a while back which crashed just about any application which relied on it. If you do have QT installed, for fun, try uninstalling it.

OK - All working again - Thank you Aaron. :D

I did have QT installed but it was removed some time ago. It's not in the Start Menu or in the Control Panel/AddRemove programs.

But I found a QuickTime folder still left in the \program files\ folder. Obviously the QT uninstaller does not do a full clean up - so I deleted that folder.

And now RB is working.

Not happy with that I put the folder back just to confirm it is the cause

The folder
\program files\QuickTime\QTSystem\ contains a ton of files and folders but by deleting just the one file called QuickTime.qts makes RB work again.

What is that file and why does it make RB crash ?

That file is basically a shared library that allows other applications to access QuickTime APIs. REALbasic has a QuickTime plugin that attempts to load that library so that it can provide various QT functions. Apple made a release (7.0, IIRC) that has the shared library, but doesn't actually export any functions from it. So apps load the library up just fine, but crash when trying to get functions out of it.

Such is the nature of Apple...

I also program home automation systems, and in many homes these days people want to be able to integrate their iPods and such into the system - which naturally means we programmers get to find out how it can actually be done. Apple provides their own small level of integration into their own hardware, but won't let a programmer even get close to communicating directly to the iPod - I hear you have to fight a horde of angry, starved bears with a keyboard and wire crimper to the entertainment of Steve Jobs in order to be given ten minutes to look over their protocol...

Well, in this case, it was just a major screw-up on Apple's part. Their .0 release had nothing exported, but their very quick .1 release put the exports back in. I don't think they intended to release the product with the exports missing since that's the documented way to access QT from your own apps.
